MAJOR PLAYER IN PACIFIC ISLANDER FILMMAKING LAUNCHES CRITICAL GRASSROOTS FUNDRAISER
(Honolulu)—Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) today announced the launch of a $15 million fundraising campaign. The goal is to get three million donors to contribute over a two-year period. The grassroots campaign aims to secure PIC’s future in the wake of the damage wrought by Congress’ recission of Corporate for Public Broadcasting funding. This action resulted in a 75% cut to PIC’s funding, causing a reduction of programming and support to the growing Pacific Islander media ecosystem.
Over the past 35 years, PIC has been a leading funder of Pacific Islander media content. It has invested in over 250 independent films, contributed more than 200 hours of national broadcast and streaming media content, created career development programs, and assisted several award-winning Pacific Islander filmmakers. Projects from island nations across the Pacific might not have come to the public without PIC’s support.
“We know millions have viewed and enjoyed our programming over the last three decades”, said Cheryl Hirasa, executive director of PIC. “Along the way, we have cultivated a deep community of story tellers who are committed to getting a more accurate picture of Pacific Islanders presented to the world. I know this campaign is a tall task, but I am confident we have support to achieve our goal.”
“With the loss of federal funding for public media, PIC’s work to support Pacific Islander filmmakers is more essential than ever, to bring their powerful stories to national and global audiences, and to encourage dialogue across diverse cultures, ethnicities, and regions”, said Janel Quirante PIC’s board chair.
The fundraising campaign kicks off as part of PIC’s 35th Anniversary celebration. Stay tuned for announcements about the several activities and events throughout the year.
