WHALE RIDER NATIONAL OUTREACH CAMPAIGN AND INTERACTIVE WEB EXPERIENCE
Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) have joined together to create a national outreach campaign and interactive web experience around the broadcast of the award-winning New Zealand film, The Whale Rider, premiering July 24 on PBS check local listings). The impetus for the collaboration is the parallel between the two organizations' goals: PIC's mission of presenting broadcast media content that tells the stories of the peoples of the Pacific and programs that portray indigenous peoples in leadership roles; and GSUSA's goal of providing activities, resources and projects that explore and celebrate diverse populations.
There are currently 2.8 million girls (ages 5-17) and nearly one million adult members in Girl Scouts of the USA. The campaign will encourage Girl Scouts ages 8-17 to reach their full potential by exploring the film's themes of empowerment, leadership and nature.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:
- Under the Elliott Wildlife Values Project, STUDIO 2BSM - the Girls Scouts' interactive community for teens - will create an opportunity for girls to write articles about how the film relates to them. Find out more at the STUDIO 2BSM website (www.studio2b.org). Project duration: July 1 to October 3, 2005. Contact María Cabán at 212-852-5727 or mcaban@girlscouts.org.
- PIC and GSUSA have jointly developed the The Whale Rider Family Viewers Guide for use by individuals, families, and Girl Scout groups and troops. Recommended activities will include a "Girl Scout Connection" that ties to film-related awards Girl Scouts may earn.
PROJECT GOALS:
- To provide opportunities for viewers and groups to explore and celebrate diverse populations.
- To expand upon the film's themes of empowerment and leadership, generational differences, cultural heritage and nature, for use by girls, teachers and students, community and youth-serving organizations and families.
